          The GVAWL

                 By Garrett Brauch

Have you worried about stray dogs and cats in Gunnison? This is why I like the GVAWL. For starters, you can help out if you care about animals like myself. I think it’s a good idea. You can volunteer for a good cause by being a foster parent for a dog or cat. Second, you could make a new friend. You could go to the GVAWL and meet the animals and take home a new buddy. Last you can help out your community by adopting a pet. I think you should adopt a pet from the GVAWL because it will let you get in on the fun of owning an animal that needs a home. In conclusion you heed this advice,  “I want you to help your local animal shelter”.

Beetle Kill in Colorado

            By Jacob Sparks

Who knew that a little bug could cause so much damage? In the forests of Colorado there is a beetle that lives in trees that does cause so much destruction and death.

To begin, the mountain pine beetle is one of the causes of beetle kill in the forests of Colorado.  The Mountain Pine Beetle has killed over 16 million hertacers of forests in Colorado. The Mountain Pine Beetle develops through four stages which are egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Also, often beetles kill trees and then the trees become really dry.  Fires could happen more and the fire would spread fast because the wood of the trees would be dry. Dry wood can cause the flame to get bigger and burn more hot and if that fire is not contained then forests fires could be even more destructive.

Next, beetle kill can be relived in a small way.  Freezing the beetles kills the beetles and then some trees can be saved because of the cold climate.

Finally, beetle kill can be good because the trees they kill can still have some uses. Beetle kill wood can be used for making furniture and the furniture can sell for a lot of money.  Donated money can go to help finding ways to stop beetle kill.

Those are some facts about beetle kill in Colorado and other places in the world.
